At what age did you get rid of the binky/pacifier?

I won't let my son have his when we go out in public but he still usually takes it for the 1 nap he has during the day and at night when I put him to sleep for the night... I notice his tongue often sticks out of his mouth when he doesn't have it...my son is 15 months, is this ok he still has it sometimes or should I get rid of it completely now? and if I decide to get rid of it completely now should I slowly wean him from it or just throw them all out (I have 3 of them but really only 1 which he uses...the other 2 are like backup in case I lose the 1).
