How do I take care of a new kitten?

my friend gave me a little month old cute gray and white kitten and brought it to me while i was at my dads house in was scared the first day but i played with it and snuggled it to let it know it was safe and for the rest of my time with my dad (which was 3 days) perfectly calm and cuddly while then i took it home with me to my moms and its a complete spaz! it wont quit climbing up and down the furniture and chasing around your feet and jumping and prouncing at every little flinch! i am have tempted to give the cat away the spray doesnt work nor does giving it a slap and saying no its a complete spaz so i locked it in the bathroom and it meowed the whole time so i took it out! how do i get this little kitty to go back to way it was when i had it at my dads house before i chuck it at the wall! please help so it doesnt get hurt!!!
