I removed "sound max" by mistake what can I do,apart from,system restore tried 2download a driver not working

when ever i try to download the driver,I keep getting a pop-up that tells me that the device cannot be found.I am SO FRUSTRATED!!! I need to have sound on my computer, I have tried system restore and even that has not worked,is there anyother way to get sound back on my computer,I need help, actually I'd say I am at the point of desperation!
